CHEVY CORVETTE ZR1 TO PACE INDY 500

April 26th, 2018 by

The 2018 Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 27th. The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will serve as the official pace car! The ZR1 has a stunning 755 horsepower capability and 715 pound-feet of torque. It is the king of the ‘Vettes and the 15th Corvette to lead the race.

Since 1978, Corvettes have had held the prestigious honor of pacing the race a total of 14 times. The 2019 ZR1 is equipped with equipment that will allow the driver and passenger to communicate with race control and other track operations. They have also installed a full caution lighting system so that low-sitting racers can see it on the track. Safety first!

The race is 500 miles, hence the name Indy 500. Five hundred miles is 200 laps around the 2-½ mile oval known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race can take between 3 to 4 hours to finish. That’s a lot of driving, but who are we to complain? The average speed is around 185 miles per hour! That takes fast to a whole other level. The pace car will easily keep speeds around 100 mph so that the racecars’ tires stay at the proper temperature. In 1996, Arie Luyendyk was clocked at 237 mph. He definitely felt the need for speed.
